The Dorothy Killam Fellowship 2025, hosted by the University of Calgary and supported by the National Research Council, is now accepting applications for its next cohort. This highly regarded fellowship provides exceptional researchers with the time and resources needed to focus on projects of national or global significance.

Funding Package

Each Dorothy Killam Fellowship offers a generous award of $80,000 CAD per year for two (02) years, for a total of $160,000 CAD. These are research release-time fellowships, designed to free recipients from teaching and administrative duties, enabling them to dedicate themselves fully to their research initiatives. The fellowship supports research across a wide range of disciplines, including:

  • Humanities
  • Natural Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Health Sciences
  • And interdisciplinary studies linking any of the above

The award is granted to individuals, but funding is administered by the Canadian research institution where the fellow is employed.

Eligibility Criteria

The Dorothy Killam Fellowships are designed for early- to mid-career researchers who:

  • Have typically completed their PhD within the last 15 years
  • Are currently employed at a Canadian university or research institute
  • Are conducting high-impact, innovative research
  • Align with the values associated with the Killam legacy:

Barrier Breaker – Challenges conventional norms through forward-thinking research
Research Leader – Builds partnerships and leads with academic influence

Each year, between 5 and 8 fellowships are awarded based on the quality of applications and selection committee approval.

Application Timeline

Here are the key dates for the 2025 application cycle:

  • April 7, 2025 – Optional SUPPORT Review Deadline (University of Calgary internal review for feedback)
  • April 7, 2025 – 4:30 PM – Internal institutional review deadline (submit research proposal, candidate statement, and approvals form)
  • April 30, 2025 – Deadline to submit a preliminary research abstract through the fellowship portal (new requirement for 2025)
  • May 13, 2025 – Final date to submit full application documents to University of Calgary’s Research Services Office
  • May 22, 2025 – 11:59 PM – Official application deadline.
